All that stuff in the latest thing about the Greatest Canadian is simultaneously very interesting & a big load of steaming horseshit. I learned stuff that I didn't know about Canadian history, which I'm interetsed in so that was good. I can't take seriously anyone who complains about the top 10 being nothing but white men though. Until roughly 50 years ago (or less!) everything, everywhere was simply FOR WHITE MEN!!! Science, medicine, politics, business, etc was all white guy's stuff. (not that I think that's how things should be) Honest people know it's true; it shows how far we've come in the last few decades that we all notice that most of the people on the list are white men though.

If that list of "greatest Canadians" meant anything it would have Sir William Osler, John Clarles Fields, & Glenn Gould, in the top 50 at the very least.

There are innumerable people who have made significant contributions or played important roles to history that simply are not recognized because they aren't white men.

History is written by white men about white men, but that doesn't mean history is only made by white men.

I'm finding this top 10 list pretty amusing, if only to watch everyone whose favourite Canadian didn't get picked. Apparently, if your hero isn't in the top 10, the whole thing is a sham, a farce, a travesty if you will. What committee of elitists picked these 10, anyway?

Also, I love that Don Cherry made the 10. I wouldn't vote for him, but it seems to be getting up a lot of people's nose. Elitist people's noses, that is.

that's partially true (see "The Assassination of Julius Caesar" by Michael Parenti for example), but I'd be hard-pressed to find just anybody who who can match Osler's contribution to medicine, or has done something roughly equvalent in another field. Fields like like our Alfred Nobel; that is, there's no Nobel Prize in math, but there's a Fields Medal, which is only given out once every 4 years. Nobel was Swedish, Fields was Canadian, & started the math tradition @ U of Toronto.

IMO the reason why history books are so male dominated, is that so many rich power hungry white men really have poor self esteem and hide it with a false huge ego and then need to make testimonials to themselves.
