Is this the forum for sports stuff? If not, someone please move this.

Leafs v. Senators tonight. This is the worst officiated game I've seen since the last Olympics women's final betwen US and Canada.

Dropped sticks = slashing. Diving all over the freaking place. Taps = slashing.

What the hell has got into the NHL?

I know, it was pathetic.

The funny thing is, though, that after the Leaves got so far behind because of power play goals scored after chintzy penalty calls, they got a couple of penalties called "slashing" that were really cases of spearing (borne out of frustration with the previous penalties, perhaps).

I think fighting happens when the game is badly officiated. Like tonight. If the league wants to cut down on fights, let's get some sensible officiating.

Did you see that game, Scott? Smiley an' all, it was awful from any point of view. Even Senator-can-do-no-wrong-fans.

[confession]

I watched it during commercials. My family voted to watch "A Very Brady Christmas" instead.

Dropped stick? Are you talking about that near break away where the Maple Leaf player slashed the Senator on the hand? Obviously a penalty.

I find in the new NHL its the teams that aren't skating and are getting outplayed that end up taking a bunch of penalties. I like it. So many games in 2003-2004 were turned into snoozefests because, if a team decided not to put in a full effort they could just hook their way to a win.

I think every time someone puts his stick on an opposing player they should get thrown in the sin bin. If they aren't intending to use their stick to hook, or interfere with the other player then why put it on the guy in the first place?

I don't like Cherry, but I think he's right about guys running the goalies. It seems that for now, defensemen have been hamstrung a bit. Thing is, I can't think of a good remedy. I like the highlight reel goals as much as the next guy. And I appreciate the long stretches of play between whistles.

I didn't see the game, and when I checked the scores at nhl dot come I nearly puked!

Thanks for informing me about the poor reffing -- I can retain my faith in the blue+white.

The game was poorly officiated, but it also catapulted me from near the cellar into 5th place in my fantasy league.

I'm not sure how to feel.

That play has been legal as long as I've been playing organised hockey, roughly 35 years.

When a forward has you beat, and is about to shoot, the D may give him a stiff whack (no backswing allowed - about an 18" arc is OK) on the mitts.

Besides, Kaberle swung with one hand only, which usually isn't called slashing (I once broke my stick over a guy doing that - no call).
