I m looking for a good, general, encyclopedia type book of Native legends and stories of Canadian First Nations.

Im poor and have to get it through some online store, so one book that has short entries on every 'character' in Canadian first-nations of old is really really best for me.

Any suggestions?

I'll check around...

Okay, about 30 seconds of Amazon and Google searching has already turned up this:

Handbook of North American Indians (having used this I can say that it doesn't say all that much about oral histories, legends, mythologies, etc.)

Encyclopedia of Native American Religions (1992)

Dictionary of Native American Mythology (1992)

Encyclopedia of Native American Shamanism (1998)

Native American Myth and Legend: An A-Z of People and Places (1998)

All these seem to be available from Amazon, but I can't speak to their accuracy, or even whether they deal with First Nations located within Canada (rather than the US).

As a final note: "First Nations of old"?!?

Just read an article listing stories relating to Kuper Island, nothing general of course. Here is what the author listed:

"Memories of the Chemainus Valley", Lillian Gustafson

"Tales from the Longhouse", by Indian Children of British Columbia (1973) [stories of residential school children]

"Place Names of the Halkomelm People" (1972, unpublishished master thesis UBC), by David Lewis Rozen

You can contact Charlie "Wolf" Smoke, who is in South Dakota after being deported by the Canadian government. He is an expert, and can be reached at:

[email protected]

Furthermore, you can learn about his struggles HERE. Just tell him that the Optative Theatrical Laboratories referred you to him. Best of luck!
