did you have a child recently?...will you being having a child soon?....will/did you save your newborns umbilical cord?

from what i know, only the Alberta and Quebec health care systems give parents the option of saving/banking/keeping the stem cells in umbilical cords...without cost....in every other province you have to pay out of pocket to bank your childs umbilical cord

to me this issue seems like a no-brainer for any politician/political party that wants to talk about the unfairness of the Canada Health Act....if you're poor and living outside of Alberta and Quebec, your kids are going to pay a future price for not having a bank of stem cells....

private umbilical banks throughout Canada versus public umbilical banks in Alberta/Quebec = truly not fair....if you're going to be having a child and you live near the Quebec/Alberta border....do your child a favour and give birth to the child in those provinces...politicians in the other provinces couldn't give a shit about the future health of your child..

Paul Martin said he wanted to "fix healthcare for a generation"...why didn't he insist that the 10's of billions the feds would give the provinces for health care MUST be used for banking umbilcal cords of the next generation?....

fucking do-nothing politicians do this...build big freezers outside of hospitals in Newfoundland, Ontario, Nunavut, BC, ect....give parents the option to bank their childs umbilical cord

if you're going to be having a baby soon and you live outside of Alberta/Quebec and you can't afford to pay thousands to bank your childs umbilical cord....call/email/write your MP, MLA, media outlet and demand they do something....FAST!!!!

So just to get this straight Courtney. You want me to write a letter to my MP to give stem cells therapeutic use that can be used in non-related people, in order to improve their quality of life?
Is that right?

Toedancer---

if you're going to be having a child you should have the option of freezing/banking/keeping said childs umbilical cord....if you feel like giving that umbilical cord for scientific/research purposes...all the power to you....if you feel like keeping that umbilical cord for use of you or your child only....it's up to you...

the bottom line is this....governments from all provinces could quickly and cheaply build a giant freezer to store/stockpile umbilical cords from any parents who likes that option....if you don't want to keep your childs umbilical cord...fair enough...it can be thrown away or burnt....if you want to keep half the stems cells in the umbilical cord and donate the other half to science....fair enough....it's your choice....but to have only 2 provinces providing options seems downright unfair...

Okay then, so your saying every province should have this in their hospital insurance plan. Not just the 2. Excuse me for seeming to be quite out of the loop, I am.
On the other hand, if I was still a patient in my old medical centre, this wouldn't even be a problem, even if I was out of province. I would simply make it a request of my doctor, no matter.

Could you pls. tell me what the real problem is?

Toedancer---

perhaps i misunderstand you....are you saying that -being from Ontario- you can request that your childs umbilical cord can be banked free of charge?....from what i know (as little as that is...) only Alberta and Quebec publically finance the storing/banking/keeping of umbilical cords....

the crux of my arguement is that it's unfair that banking umbilical cords in Alberta/Quebec is publically subsidized more so then in other provinces....perhaps i'm wrong

i read in another one of your posts that you have a child....do you keep that childs umbilical cord?....was it even an option (a publically subsidized option)?

You have not answered my question, yes I have a duaghter, but whether she has a publically subsidized option doesn't matter in the least.
What the hell is that suppose to mean anyway?
Look, if I want to, I can make it so, but why would I want to?

We are talking about my requests back in the 80's, why is it such an issue now? My G.P. made it an old subject back in the 80's. Are u trying to say this is NEW?

i'm sorry if i don't understand your questions...i'm detecting some sort of pissed-off-ness in your post (i seem to have that effect amoungst people/posters)...

all i think is that it might be unfair that Alberta/Quebec helps parents keep their kids umbilical cords more so then other provinces....i might be wrong in my logic....sorry if that'd the case

For gawd sakes Courtney, if you want the specimens, all you have to do IS ASK FOR THEM. No matter what province your in. It is your request. No doctor is going to say NO, it is simple as asking.

Toedancer---

i read an article in the Globe months ago that stated that Alberta/Quebec were the only provinces to publically subsidize the banking of umbilical cords...after talking to some new moms from Manitoba i found out that umbilical cords could be kept in this province if they decided to pay $500+ initial fee + $100+/year to store the umbilical cord....it just doesn't seem fair to me that if you live in Alberta/Quebec you can save your kids cord without having to pay such expenses...

perhaps i'm wrong though....maybe anyone from everywhere within Canada can keep their specimens free of charge....maybe the article i read was much ado about nothing....
