My boss just asked me to "coach" Dan into becoming one of us. I tried to tell her that it would be like gilding the silly and that Dan is beautiful just the way he is, but she was unmoved. "You can start by telling him to ditch the desk dinosaur and the Star Wars calendar," was all she said. Now I'm faced with the prospect of lording over poor Dan with a clipboard, whistle and cattle prod, barking orders at him to assimilate or die trying. Problem is, I don't know what to tell him to assimilate to. Who are we, and what is our look? I've been sitting here for the past half-hour trying to figure out who we are and what our look is, but all I've come up with so far are three words: country club couture. We're the blow-dried buttoned-down Biffs and Buffys of the upscale personal data assistant set.

Memo to office dweebs: Resist!

Precisely the reason I am avoiding that entire line of work, despite society's insistance that it's the way to go. I could never survive. (Also fluorescent lighting and the smell of photocopiers gets to me after a while)

Not just dweebs get that. When I was teaching ESL/FSL, they were always carping at us to dress "professionally", like lawyers or bankers. Problem was, we earned about $20 an hour NOT INCLUDING prep time. A lot of us got fed up and are just taking private students.

Of course you can't expect to teach in tracksuits or patched jeans, but the bar was far higher for us than for teachers and professors with tenure and decent pay.

Edited to add: This topic should be in EARNING AND SPENDING.

When I was a "lawyer" I made $8.75 an hour. No joke. I was still expected to dress in a suit every day, however.

$20 an hour not including prep time comes to about $10 an hour.

How on earth could you afford a suit? Or if you had a suit already, how on earth could you afford to have it dry cleaned?

What has your supervisor got against a Star Wars calendar? Dan rocks by showing his true colours. I think that your supervisor has other issues with this guy and is just picking something obvious or geeky that she/he can pick on. Either that or she/he is trying to hide something by diverting the attention to someone else.

It sounds like an awful place to work.

Is it a personality modification service ?

I'd quit.
