This could as well go in Politics, but anyhow. Lewis Lapham wrote a great essay on Thomas Paine in this month's Harper's. You can read it here

Abstract:

Were Thomas Paine alive today and still within reach of federal authorities, John Ashcroft would prosecute him for blasphemy under a technoligically enhanced version of the Alien and Sedition Acts. The same author of "Common Sense" would recognize today's government as royalist in sentiment, monarchial and aristrocratical in its actions.
