PARIS (AFP) - Tens of thousands of French schools and universities have received copies of a Turkish book refuting Darwin's theory of evolution and describing it as "the true source of terrorism."

The education ministry said Friday that it had warned school and university directors that the textbook is not in line with the recognized curriculum and that they should disregard it.

Entitled "The Atlas of Creation", the 770-page book by Turkish author Harun Yahya quotes several passages from the Koran and asserts that "human beings did not evolve (from another species) but were indeed created.". . .

. . .The book features a photograph of the September 11, 2001 attacks on the World Trade Center with the caption: "Those who perpetuate terror in the world are in fact Darwinists. Darwinism is the only philosophy that values and incites conflict."

The theories of Charles Darwin are "the true source of terrorism," it said.

Religious wingnuts strike again.

The article does not say who financed or sent the books. That would be nice to know.

I suppose for the same reason this would be newsworthy if a Christian wing-nut wrote a book asserting that the Adam & Eve story is the "real" truth and Darwinism was bunk...and got it into tens of thousands of schools in the USA and Canada. As oreobw asked, it would be interesting to know who financed that.

Frankly, it's difficult to comprehend why this kind of shit is seriously advocated as being a legitimate alternative to evolution.

I can think of many reason: some people do not wish to admit that humans are animals and that we are special; and they desire extremely simple answers to everything. No need to think. Also a desire for life after death to compensate us for somewhat miserable existence. Also pure and simple brainwashing with a threat of eternal damnation if they question the teachings.

Yes, perhaps the world should simply worship capitalism and continue sacrificing millions on the alter of an economic long run around the third world each year. In our despair over the apparent triumph of market theology over social democracy, we should bow to Domitian-like economics as the new-old way. Besides, it was the superrich and elite who first declared themselves descendants of supernatural gods. It took us far too long in disbelieving that.
