Sticking in my mind as an unlikely explanation for the current state of things is a talk I attended this fall given by investment guru Steve Forbes. The sermon itself was a trip down memory lane, and the similarities between Forbes’ anachronistic pinings and today’s world illuminate how things, are in a way, getting simpler. And so began a fascinating glimpse into the neo-liberal mind.

How Steve Forbes taught me to stop worrying and love the bomb...

I don't know if Steve Forbes even reaches the level of a neo-liberal. He's more of a total reactionary.

As for brushes with neo-liberals, all I have to do is turn on the T.V. news, particularly the business news. Thank God for the remote control.

Michael Moore, I believe, once wrote that he thought Forbes was an alien because the man didn't blink on camera. *begin Twilight Zone them music*

Did anyone else ever see the episode of Saturday Night Live that Steve Forbes hosted? That was truly frightening.

I SAW that episode, yes.

The writers put Stevie in a sketch where he was playing a roofer, spouting lines like:

"Man, I did too many jello shots at the bar last night."

and holding up his Eddie Money concert tickets: "I got two tickets to paradise, dude."

The irony meter broke that night.

I remember that SNL episode well. Rage Against the Machine was the musical guest, and they got kicked off the show after their first song for hanging the stars & stripes upside-down on their amps.
