It's .......... here ...........!! What d'yall think? Here's the Globe and Mail's story. I'm sure there'll be more on Wednesday.

I love online book-buying myself, and it was always so much easier to find stuff on Amazon.com than on Indigo.ca. That's been changing recently, though.

One of the best things about Amazon was always its plug-ins to used books sold by stores or individuals. Indigo seems to have improved in this regard recently. I just picked up a couple used books from Indigo last week -- Tariq Ali's Street Fighting Years and Warren Hinckle's If you have a Lemon, Make Lemonade. Both are out of print, but I was easily able to find copies in their used book section, for a half-reasonable price. When I went to Amazon.ca, though, this feature didn't seem to be available -- at least not yet. (Although, strangely, they gave me the option of ordering Hinckle's book new, which Indigo did not.)

Opinions, rants, raves, prognostications?

They already have a French section, which Indigo does not have, AFAIK. It's funny how sometimes American companies are more eager to get in the French Canadian business than English Canadian ones...

Well, if you're looking for French Canadian books, wouldn't you go to Archambault.ca?

On balance, Amazon.ca is likely a good thing, says the Globe's Mathew Ingram.

Arrival of Amazon.ca gives Indigo the blues, says the Toronto Star's Rachel Ross.

This is a weird story, I must admit. Small book publishers have long been saying that Amazon treats them better than "Canadian" sellers like Chapters and Indigo. F_a's excellent observation about the French section on Amazon.ca is just further evidence of how clueless Indigo can be.

When it comes to books, I prefer browsing in a store. If I know exactly what I want, I sometimes buy on-line, but more often I'll go to the library.

However, I do buy music and DVDs on-line, because I usually know what I want and I don't need to browse.

Chapters.ca sucks. HMV.com often says they have something in stock but really it isn't. Amazon.com seems to have a much better selection. It seems to be better designed.

I'm not too worried about Amazon. I think book-lovers prefer real stores. There's enough competition in the music and DVD business that one more won't really hurt anybody. I won't cry if HMV or Chapters loses a little business.

On the radio this morning, they said that many publishers prefer dealing with Amazon because they get paid much faster.

I'm not sure what to say to say about the whole Amazon.ca thing. Ive only bought a book online and that was a couple years ago from amazon.com. But I would like to take this opportunity to say Fuck Chapters! I wish I had more details but I heard they were bought out by some censorship freak which is why their mediocre but huge magazine selection sucks even more now, and we cant get Bizarre anymore
However, I did buy my copy of Stupid White Men there recently, my mom loooves going there and she gets free coffee grounds from Starbucks for the compost, sorry I'm looking for good things to say.
