Remarked upon in last thread, there's a nice mix of old PCs and CA types, along with some newbies. Old Reform/CA Stephen Harper - Prime Minister Stockwell Day - Minister of Public Safety Gary Lunn - Minister of Natural Resources Carol Skelton - Minister of National Revenue and Minister of Western Economic Diversification Monte Solberg - Minister of Citizenship and Immigration Chuck Strahl - Minister of Agriculture (though Chuck was Deputy Leader of the Progressive Conservative Democratic Representative Caucus for a few months - Gary Lunn was another PCDRCer) Vic Toews - Minister of Justice Old P.C. Jean-Pierre Blackburn - Minister of Labour and Minister of the Economic Development Agency of Canada for the Regions of Quebec Michael Chong - President of the Queen's Privy Council and Minister of Intergovernmental Affairs and Minister for Sport Michael Fortier - Minister of Public Works and Government Services Loyola Hearn - Minister of Fisheries and Oceans Marjory LeBreton - Leader of the Government in the Senate Peter MacKay - Minister of Foreign Affairs Rob Nicholson - House Leader Jim Prentice - Minister of Indian Affairs Greg Thompson - Minister of Veterans Affairs Old Liberals Lawrence Cannon - Minister of Transport David Emerson - Minister International Trade Newbies Rona Ambrose - Minister of Environment John Baird - President of the Treasury Board Maxime Bernier - Minister of Industry Tony Clement - Health Diane Finley - Minister of Human Resources and Social Development Jim Flaherty - Minister of Finance Gordon O'Connor - Minister of Defence Bev Oda - Minister of Canadian Heritage and Status of Women Josée Verner - Minister of International Co-operation and Minister for La Francophonie and Official Languages Reviewing the mix of candidates though I can't find a single real moderate, let alone a remotely pink tory, among them. Or is Peter McKay now considered a moderate conservative in some meaningful sense? (or does such a figure even exist anymore within the party?) Also noticed the old PC bunch mainly got the minor ministries with major league slash and burn Harrisite reactionary Flaherty getting finance. Two questions, are there in fact any genuine moderates in his cabinet? And if not, is there any reason left to assume that Harper is going to moderate his own ideological agenda even for the short term? I'm not that familiar with some of names from back East so maybe others can fill us in(?) Please discuss.

Stockwell Day as Public Safety Minister? Can anyone say increased domestic spying? Tony Clement as Health Minister: Can anyone say privatization of public services at taxpayer expense? David Emerson as International Trade Minister: Can anyone say strong-arming neoliberal trade deals and more failure on softwood lumber? Michael Fortier as Public Works minister? Can anyone make parallels to the Sponsorship group and public sector downsizing? Rona Ambrose as Environment Minister: Can anyone say bye, bye regulations you're hurting Alberta productivity? Jim Flaherty as Finance Minister: Thanks a lot Ontario.

We'll know for sure as soon as the first budget comes down.My sense is that a leaderless bankrupt Liberal Party will end up voting with the government for at least the next year. That leaves the NDP and the BQ free to take on the government on their whole agenda.

My one offensive remark of the evening:The Rona Ambrose post is a smart political move. Environmentalists are getting mobilized, and Ambrose is intelligent and fairly well-spoken. When bad people get ready to do some bad things, they'll choose an attractive young woman to be their public face. She'll work well on film; the scientists, activists and protesters won't. Only Rahim Jaffer is more handsome than Rona Ambrose.
