Joseph Stiglitz reviews George Soros' new book On Globalization here

quote:

The world of international finance and economics is astonishing. What would seem to be basic, and even obvious, principles often seem contradicted. One might have thought that money would flow from rich countries to the poor countries; but year after year, exactly the opposite occurs. One might have thought that the rich countries, being far more capable of bearing the risks of volatility in interest rates and exchange rates, would largely bear those risks when they lend money to the poor nations. Yet the poor are left to bear the burdens. Of course, no one expected that the world market economy would be fair; but at least we were taught that it was efficient. Yet these and other tendencies suggest that it is neither.

George Soros has a hell of a lot of fucking nerve.

This guy writes books saying how mistaken he was and how he's seen the light when he got rich off the very forces that he now condemns.

If he were sincere he'd give all the money away.

Well, Doc, to be fair he is giving a *large* portion of it away every year.

I do not think it makes sense to be moralistic about George Soros. He got rich on the system, true. But he is now doing a lot to expose/reform it. I would rather have a man with a change of heart than a permanent right-wing billionaire on my hands.

What he says about capitalism has a substantial amount of credibility which flows from the fact that he worked it so well.
