US blocking deal on fighting Aids

quote:
The Bush administration, heavily influence by the Christian right, is blocking key proposals for a new United Nations package to combat HIV/Aids worldwide over the next five years because of its opposition to the distribution of condoms and needle exchanges and references to prostitutes, drug addicts and homosexuals.

The United States is being supported by many Muslim countries, including Egypt, and various conservative African and Latin American nations. "There are a lot of unholy alliances all over the place," said a European official attending UN talks in New York on Thursday night.

The american taliban is at it again.

o,no!
i didn't realize that this was faitacompli already. steven lewis has been warning of the rt wing influencein hiv issues for years.
what is the catholic church doing about this?
i thought that rome was coming out with a new loosening of attitudes re condoms to prevent the spread of hiv.
those poor, poor women
the rt wing hates women but they must hate african women the most of all.

Not according to Catholics who attended the UN conference.

"Some areas see the church as always regressive simply because we will not support condom-based strategies," said Chris Bain, director of the Catholic Agency for Overseas Development, an aid agency of the Catholic Bishops' Conference of England and Wales.
