Australian scientists teleport photons!

quote:
Towards the final frontier: thanks to particles in a laser beam

It's teleportation, but not as Kirk and co would know it

Tim Radford Science editor
Tuesday June 18, 2002
The Guardian

Two Australian scientists have brought the world of Star Trek just a step nearer. They have "teleported" information between two laser beams a metre apart.

They used a ghostly phenomenon called quantum entanglement to dismantle a signal - transmitted in photons, or particles of light - in one shaft of laser light and instantaneously rebuild a replica of it in a second laser beam.

"What we have demonstrated here is that we can take billions of photons, destroy them simultaneously, and then recreate them in another place," Ping Koy Lam of the Australian National University told the Australian newspaper. The team worked only with light, not atoms.

This could be groovy, eh?

(I hate airplanes. I could go for being beamed.)

Notice the article DOES say that the photons were reconstituted. This implies that they were transferred... in a sense.

You're reconstituting their twins. How do you know you're not reconstituting their evil twins?

Because I am the evil twin, and I haven't been.

Doc we aren't made of photons but molecules aren't we?

Ok. We're made up, fundamentally, of protons, neutrons and electrons. They combine in certain ways to form the elements that we know, and from those, the molecules we're made of.

Technically, we "sort of" are made of photons, but that's only because virtual photons carry the electromagnetic interactions that govern the chemical reactions inside our bodies.

Thanks. I guess god hasn't the answer on that one. It sounds like a great way to travel. Much less pollution.

That still doesn't convince me that you're not landing in Australia or Mars as the indistinguishable evil twins, while the good ones got sent to Alpha Centauri. No use telling me you haven't been: evil twins lie.
I'm not getting into this contraption until you totally debug it.

I think we are allowed to choose our destinations. Otherwise count me out. Imagine, the streets would be empty and people could bicycle, ski, whatever. Sounds good.
