I'm not entirely sure if this is where this should go, but I figure it should be fine, since this is technology.
I was in a washroom, and for the first time in my life, I encountered a flushless/water free urinal. I remember this thread and this thread. I found a few sites about them, like this one and this one, which seem to be the most similar to the one I encountered. Has anybody else ever seen the like? What do other babblers think of them? The theory seems like a pretty good idea to me, and I didn't notice any undue odour or problems while I was in the bathroom.

There's one at the train station in Jasper. It's pretty cool.

quote:The new wall-hung Sloan WES-1000 Waterfree Urinal with wall outlet saves you water and money.
On the first reading, I thought that said, "The new well-hung Sloan WES-1000".

Maybe the mistake is meant to be made. Urinals that subconsciously reinforce men's self esteem about their body.

Actually, non-flushing urinals have been around for MANY years...
Here's a picture of one:

With the Falcon urinal, I'd hate to be the one that has to change the cartridge. Ewwwwww.

"Wall-hung" -- ha! A clear example of subliminal advertising if I ever saw one.
I am so sure that that was intentional. Some copywriter hugged himself all day for thinking of that one.

Waterless toilets are, in short, wonderful. They have them, for instance, at the Choi Building at the University of British Columbia, where there is no detectable odour at all.

The one thing I don't get about them, swallow, is what happens to the outward surface. I mean, nothing is flushing it clean afterwards, yes/no? So there would be at least some surface contamination each time, yes/no?

The main Choi innovation is the composting toilets -- although maybe it's less an innovation than a going back to something that works better than the 20th C technology. As to urinals, the surface is quite slick so there's less problem than you'd think, and there is a bucket of water in the room for those so inclined (both to rinse the surfaces and to rinse themselves, for those who dislike toilet paper). The cleaning staff take care of the rest each evening. It seems counter-intuitive to those of us brought up with certain fixed ideas of cleanliness, but it really does work.
