Maybe this is too simple to warrant discussion, but I was just ruminating about the idea that the biggest threat to our wellbeing is the appearance of getting things done. Whereas in the past it was occasionally politically expedient to appear to be working hard and getting things done, this has now become an ultimate end of politicians. Witness the screw-up of the US government this week, in blowing a pakistani infiltration of Al-Qaida.
(Though it's always possible that this isn't exactly how the thing went down.)
Another example is airport security, pat downs of geriatrics, etc. Another, (and I know I'm always harping on this), is everything that's going on with mad cowin Canada and the US. (The policy of refusing to test young cattle is a more sophisticated version of Klein's "shoot, shovel, and shut up" doctrine.)

Point being that often enough such strategies come back to bite, and we're swimming in some pretty dangerous waters right now. I'm not too sure I want to be around when that veneer flakes off. (Was that enough metaphor mixing?)

Jughead, you are on to something. I think it boils down to bureaucratic buck passing. An office manager once complained to me that the PHD's in his office couldn't make decisions; all that education, but no ability to put their name on the line. Once you make a decision, you can be held to account, and that can be tough to live up to.
