This story is a week old but I just came across it. Apologies if it has already been posted elsewhere. quote: Several sixth-graders from suburban St. Louis are being disciplined for creating "Hit a Jew Day" and then hitting Jewish classmates. Four or five students at Parkway West Middle School in Chesterfield could be suspended and undergo counseling for last week's incident, school officials told the Associated Press. Others who taunted Jewish students or encouraged others to participate face lesser punishment. Officials said fewer than 10 of the school's 35 Jewish students were hit. One was slapped in the face and the others were hit mostly on the back of their shoulders. "There is a mix of sadness and outrage," said district spokesman Paul Tandy. "The concern is a lot of kids knew about it and they didn't take action or say anything."
USA Today Mostly it sounds to me like the school is taking appropriate action in disciplining the ringleaders and requiring them (if not all students involved?) to get counselling. But the story just seems so bizarre to me that I thought it was worth sharing. Where do a bunch of 12 year olds come up with an idea like this? [ 30 October 2008: Message edited by: robbie_dee ]

The only point of origin that I can think of, off hand, is the cartoon "South Park", where the maladjusted, mean and disturbed character "Cartman" is always issuing anti-semetic barbs to his Jewish "friend" Kyle.Maybe it's the Archie Bunker factor. Take a negative character, make him bigoted to lampoon bigots. Eventually, it backfires when the character becomes a warm and fuzzy bigot, like "Archie Bunker" or takes on a satirical "cool" as in "Eric Cartman". As we see, bigots are not funny in real life. Of course, the South Park connection is not based on anything but my own imagination. I just saw the thread title, and thought, "that's Eric Cartman." We'll see.

Yeah, I have to wonder if this could even be possible at a school where the kids have comprehensive anti-racism training. I mean, I suppose it COULD, kids rebel, but from my experience as a parent, I know that my kid does things without thinking about it, but is very open to reason and empathy when it's explained to him why something he says or does is problematic. And he learns from it.And my kid is no model, no saint. (Well, actually, he's absolutely beautiful and perfect, but you know what I mean. ) There sure is a long way to go, isn't there? And since most of us parents also grew up in the same sort of school system (except it was a lot more racist and sexist than it is now), I'm sure we reinforce prejudice and racism, whether through omission of training, or acts of ignorance.

Are Borat and South Park owned by the same megalomaniac media owner as USA Today? If so, that might explain the similarities in their areas of concern. [ 01 November 2008: Message edited by: QatzelOk ]

No, 'Borat' and South Park are owned by different companies-Borat was made by 20th Century Fox, a division of News Corporation, South Park is made by Comedy Central, a division of Viacom. USA Today is owned by Gannett Media; none of these companies are tied together with regards to this incident, except in your mind, QatzelOk.
