Uhhhh. NOO

quote:
The paper claimed Thursday that the paintings were destroyed in order to get rid of damning evidence as the police investigation closes in on the culprits behind the robbery.

The Scream is one of my favourite paintings...Ever. I had one day hoped to actually see the original. But if this turns out to be true, I will be most depressed and saddened.

There's hope for your dream:
quote:
There are four versions of "The Scream." The Munch Museum had two of them, a private collector owns the third, and the fourth is on display at Oslo's National Gallery. "They were all painted by Munch, and they are all just as valuable," Christoffersen told the Associated Press.

... from an associated story.

Oh, I was quite aware of those, but regardless, the destruction of one is far too much.

Two points.
First, it's Munsch.
And second, Robert Munsch doesn't actually do the paintings in those classic kids' books, he just writes the words.

First, it's Munsch.

? Surely you jest!

Actually, it is pronounced MOONK.

And people should note that the story comes from "Dagbladet" which is a pretty flashy paper not known for accuracy.

I'd say it is more reliable than supermarket magazines about the stars and their battles with cancer and aliens, and less teliable than the Toronto Sun.

If I had stolen The Scream, I would claim to have destroyed it.

PS. One of the versions of the scream has a note scrawled by Munch in the corner: "Maa ha blitt skritt av en galning" "Must have been painted by a madman."

The police don't seem to believe the story:
quote:

OSLO (Reuters) - Norwegian police expressed skepticism about a newspaper report Thursday that thieves had burned Edvard Munch's missing masterpiece "The Scream" out of fear that investigators were closing in.

"The Oslo police have no knowledge of that," Iver Stensrud, the police chief leading the investigation since gunmen stole the iconic 1893 painting from an Oslo gallery in August 2004, told Norway's NRK public radio.

So there may be hope yet.

Maybe they should check under his other paintings.
quote:
...Dubbed Girl and Three Men's Heads by gallery officials, the painting was found underneath another work by Munch, The Dead Mother.

Both canvases were stretched out on the same frame.

The hidden painting was discovered when restoration work was being done...

Still hope of recovering The Scream, maybe:
quote:
...Thieves staged a daring daylight robbery in Oslo, seizing the painting, as well as Munch's Madonna. Authorities have made four arrests in recent months, seemingly closing in on the perpetrators...
