40% of Americans favour annexation:

Yeah, but the question was basically, would it be okay with you for Canada to become the 51st state, not whether they would support a hostile invasive takeover.

A lot of people who answered "yes" might just be thinking, "Oh sure, if they wanna join us, welcome to the union!"

Like the article says, I'm not expecting to hand in my passport or exchange my Canuck bucks any time soon. Ask the Americans if they'd be interested in annexing Cuba, France, England, and Mexico and compare the results.

As a state of 30 million we would sway the balance of power to the left and oust the right wing in America.

No way its going to happen therefore.

But can we do that in Canada first?

Unless, of course, they consider each province a state.

As I said before, if we add each province and territory as a state to the USA, that's 13 states that will, in the first past the post system, tend to vote Democratic. This would give the Dems a hammerlock on the House and in the Senate, freeing them of the necessity of acting like kinder Repubs. The enlarged United States would tend to shift to the left, which is probably not something Dubya would like.

Sure they would, Arch. This time they could have a Boston Tea Smoking Party.

So Doc, if Anschluss went all the way through and we became absorbed by the great Satan, couldn't we still retain our political parties? There's no reason to assume that New Dems, for example, would line up to support Democrats...is there?

Maybe the spectre of Svend Robinson would put the whammy on the Yank, and allow REAL left wing discourse to enter US politics.

I dunno. I do know that worst case, we'd give the Dems the biggest single reason for differentiating themselves from Repubs. We'd be like Massachusetts where no Repub has been elected in decades.

I am normally quite a placid person but this topic makes my trigger-finger twitch.

"In 2010 the Canadian Rebel Forces were thought to be nearly decimated in the battle of the Mackenzie. There is a folk rumour though, that the terrorists only retreated and to group in the hills to the south of the river's delta...There is no evidence at all of there being any survivors."

I worry that many think that some form of political union - far beyond the ties of our current economic relationship - is inevitable.

How concerned should we be?

How do you figure that each province would vote Democrat? We have totally nutcase reactionary governments now in BC, Alberta and Ontario - you don't think the conservative parties in those provinces (oh, and in BC's case, the wannabe conservative party) correlate to the Republicans in the States?

I seem to recall elsewhere a poll was quoted which indicated a majority of Canadians would vote Dem if in the USA.

For the most part, though, the reactionary governments here don't have the explicit religious leanings of the GOP. The GOP is more like the Canadian Alliance - "faith-based initiatives" and all that shit.
