Have we already discussed RFID (radio frequency identification) tags and their everyday application?

It becomes unnervingly easy to imagine a scenario where everything you buy that's more expensive than a Snickers will sport RFID tags

one opinion--there are many.

It offends me, frankly, that people use the term "big brother" so glibly to try to discredit RFID. I also think that the notion that RFID will give some future dictator in the US or Europe the ability to spy on us and therefore control us is more than a little misguided.

Some believe that RFID is going to usher in an age of government control, but that's only because they don't understand history.

From RFID Journal Live - a website for corporations using or researching RFIDs, as far as I can tell.

giant US retailer Wal-Mart Stores unexpectedly cancelled testing of a planned trial of a smart-shelf RFID system with partner Gillette that had been scheduled last month
-- another article with some info on who's using them, and who's thinking about it.

if you can't trust your pants, who can you trust?

tesco, a supermarket in the UK, is going to do a pilot-run of RFID's, they will have them in razor blades and have a camera take a photo of you when you take them off the shelf, then another when you reach the cash ... with the idea to prevent shoplifting.

RFID is part of a wider strategy to track people wherever they go (tracking mobile phones/sat phones, GPS/Galileo systems and tracking cars for the purposes of road charging), it goes on and on.

Scary isn't it? And there doesn't seem to be much that the public can do to protest this new wave of surveillance.

Unless we know who's using them and where, I guess. Then at least we'd know what not to buy...
