The US military routinly does underground testing of bombs.....not sure when the last time they lit up a nuke.

yeah that is yucca flat they did a lot of 'testing' there. i was just awe-struck by the scale of the hole in the first link. that crater is huge... frightening. if you have google earth check it out in that. you can see the hole from thousands and thousands of feet in th air

The last one they've admittted to was Operation Rebound in 1997
