It was a very big deal in Cleveland at the time since the Edmund Fitzgerald was heading for our port. We got hit with that "witch" that sank her the next day and it was in the form of an ice and snow storm with 30-40 mph winds.

Its almost inconceivable that something like that could happen again on the Great Lakes again. Hopefully.

Superior is still a very dangerous lake. Perhaps with better navigation technology, ships can avoid bad weather more easily. I don't know. A friend explained to me that when waves whip up on Superior, they are higher frequency than on the ocean. This makes it hard for ships to ride them.
