Sinister and RichThe evidence that lefties earn more.

But that's not the case. In the new U.S. study, authors Christopher S. Ruebeck of Lafayette College and Joseph E. Harrington and Robert Moffitt of Johns Hopkins University looked at a representative sample of 5,000 men and women in the United States. Across the board, they found no discernible difference between the average hourly earnings, and other characteristics, of left- and right-handed people. Both groups earned an average of $13.20 per hour in 1993. They also had identical average intelligence scores. The British study, by Kevin Denny of University College Dublin and Vincent O'Sullivan of the University of Warwick, looked at about 5,000 people born in 1958 and found modest earnings differences: 5 percent higher pay for male lefties relative to their right-handed counterparts and 5 percent lower pay for female lefties compared to female righties.

What's more noteworthy is that the pay difference appears to increase with college education. In the U.S. study, college graduates overall earned an average of 30 percent more than high-school graduates. And after accounting for other determinants of pay—age, intelligence, marital status, and race and ethnicity—lefties with college education earned 10 to 15 percent more than their right-handed counterparts. (The U.K. study did not look at the effect of college education on the earning power of lefties and righties.)

That's kind of surprising. Any thoughts?

Creative people earn more? Lefties are operating from the right "creative" side of the brain. Just a thought. If true I would expect this gap to widen as creativity and adaptability is becoming more valued in the workplace.

I've never bought into this whole thing. I know many people who are left handed and about as creative and lively as a lamp post (one that shant be posted upon). And then most of my artsy-fartsy friends are right handed.

Me? I'm a Jedi. I have the Force. No need for hands.

I also hear that lefties have a higher occurrence of automobile accidents. This may be the reason for such a low percentage in the population.

Hey, Rocky was a south paw. He launched Sylvester Stallone’s carrier in to stardom.

Why would anyone think that there ought to be a difference?

There may have been a time when most productive machinery was designed for right-handed people only; in that case, maybe right-handed people would be better at their jobs.

But once work has been transformed so that machines are usable for both groups, ie. computers, etc., there would be no reason to expect any effect.

Why would anyone think that there ought to be a difference?

It’s because, and I am going back a few years but left handed people, in panic tend to steer their automobiles to the left and into on coming traffic. Where as right handed people tend to steer their cars to the right for the same occurrence. Each can cause a collision but the lefty’s can be deadly. Maybe, life would be safer for lefties in the UK, Japan or other counties that drive on the opposite side of the road.

As for typical or ordinary tools, scissors, openers and planned conveniences, they are designed for right handed people. Even the keyboard and mouse on the computer have more functionality to for the right side. It's good motor-skill activity practice for lefties to use their right hand more often.

If there is a relationship between left handedness and income, maybe it’s because the lefty has had to think differently and that is a key factor in making more money. (oh, oh, I hope the political lefties don’t read this theory, I am already in trouble in other threads...)

Lefties are smarter than righties, as in "if your so smart why aren't you rich?"
