quote:

Racial and ethnic minorities in the USA will become a majority in 2042, but the working-age population — those 18 to 64 — will cross that threshold three years earlier, the projections say. By 2050, minorities will make up 55% of the working-age population. The share of the population that is working-age will drop steadily, from 63% to 57% in 2050.

(snip)

In 2050, the working-age population will be 30% Hispanic, 12% non-Hispanic black and 8% non-Hispanic Asian. Today, the breakdown is 15% Hispanic, 12% black and 5% Asian.

Story in USA Today

What do things look like for Canada, you ask? One in five Canadians will be what Statscan deems a "visible minority" by the year 2017. I can't find Canadian projections that go as far as 2050.

quote:

In 2017, approximately 20% of the Canadian population might belong to a visible minority group

Primarily because of sustained immigration and the low percentage of Europeans among newcomers, the visible minority population in Canada has soared in the past two decades. Between 1981 and 2001, the number of persons belonging to a visible minority group almost quadrupled, from 1.1 million to approximately 4.0 million. This growth, much faster than that of the rest of the population, boosted the proportion of the population that visible minorities represent from less than 5% in 1981 to more than 13% in 2001.

Under the reference scenario of the most recent projections of visible minorities, this increase will continue in the coming years, with the result that in 2017, the visible minority population would reach 7.1 million, representing approximately one Canadian in five.

I will be 99.

(well, parts of me will be 99)

We'll have to get babblers together to celebrate.

Heh. I'll be 101 if I can keep body and soul together until then. I'd love to have a babbler listmeet if I'm still around by then. Hell, I'll be happy to have a gathering when I turn 100.

I'm actually just home from the hospital, after a series of choking spells. My esophagus is full of mucus (big yuck), and I'm on medication that hopefully will solve the problem. I'm scheduled to go back to the hospital when the radiologist returns in October - we only get a radiologist/x-ray person once every three months, and it's a two hour flight in a 1967 DHC Twin Otter every time. In the meantime, the ENT specialist has no idea what is causing this.

I live in a part of the country that is already close to 50% people of Asian descent. It is a very nice place to live and I have wonderful neighbours to boot. It is sometimes hard to remember that in many places in Cananda white folk make up the VAST majority of people.

I'm astonished to hear from a couple of babblers who would actually be older than me.

Though I'm rather more negative - I see no useful purpose in living that long (90s) unless health etc prospects are greatly modified. No desire to survive into decrepitude.

Do you think the US will last that long? This new minority majority will inherit a wrecked and bankrupt country.

Well, jeez, nobody can really predict what will happen 40 years in the future. The whole concept of a nation-state may fall apart by then, which would either be very good or very bad...
