Governor Jeb Bush opened the first faith-based prison in the United States a few weeks ago with a characteristically spiritual proclamation to the gathered prisoners: "I can't think of a better place to reflect on the awesome love of our Lord Jesus than to be here at Lawtey Correctional. God bless you."

I find the idea kind of creepy. But I'll wait for the numbers. If recidivism is just as high as any other form of incarceration then I'll hope that the idea is thoroughly discredited. On the other hand, if if it turns out to cut recidivism, and as long as it's opt-in, I'm not sure my creeped-out feeling justifies a criticism.

I wonder how long before Bush funds a special faith-based Rastafarian prison?

Of course, if it's "opt-in" for those who have converted to christianity, you might expect the recidivism to be lower. Either that, or the prison gang-rapes will have a real revival-hall spirit to them.
