Okay, another stupid question re lawyers...........

My lawyer presented me with my bill earlier this week. There were charges ranging from software to filing fees to consultation fees.

I asked her for copies of said invoices. She denies to give them to me.

Question: Am I entitled to those copies? I feel I should be but want to be sure before I shoot my mouth off.

Thank you.

She gave you an itemized bill, as required.

Aside from whatever you think your lawyer told you this matter would cost, and apart from any concerns you seem to have about about rough treatment, was your legal outcome positive? Were the fees in the ballpark of what others have paid for similar types of service? It may save you some time and aggravation to consider this kind of thing now before trying to take this any further.

If you still think her bill was too high, and your lawyer does not respond positively to your reasoned concerns, you can try to make a complaint to the Law Society in your province, and/or you can have the laywer's bill assessed by the courts. Call the Law Society and ask them for the phone number for the Assessment Officer in your area, then go down there and pay your fee -- yes, there's a fee -- and get an appointment for a hearing. Note there are short time limits for pursuing this option.

Filing fees are set by the courts and you don't normally get an invoice - the thing being filed gets stamped by the Registrar. The fact that the court has a copy is proof that it was filed and the fee was paid.
Not sure what type of software fees there would be.
What type of consultation fees are you being charged? Doctors, physiotherapists, psychologists? The lawyer should have received a bill from them so they should be able to provide it to you.
If you have a problem with your bill it is usually with the amount of time spent on the file not the disbursements While anything is possible, it seems unlikely that a lawyer would falsify disbursements. It is much easier to pad their time.

Count Frou-Frou, your sole purpose in being on babble seems to be to bum free legal advice from us about how to screw your lawyer out of her fees. You give the impression of being the classic "client from hell" that lawyers try to avoid like the plague.

Babble is not a free legal clinic. If you have a dispute with your lawyer you know how to get it resolved. If you continue to employ the same lawyer despite what is obviously an adversarial relationship, devoid of trust, then you are just asking for more trouble.

Get yourself another lawyer - one that you trust (i.e. one that you don't feel you need to surreptitiously record your telephone conversations with). And then ask him or her for the advice you are trying to get from us. And be prepared to pay for the professional expertise you demand.
