these provinces should be saying to Ottawa and Ontario...."we have lots of clean, renewable hydroelectric energy....we want the car and parts makers to seriously consider making all-electric battery powered vehicles...we want Ottawa to consider creating ElectroCanada battery changing "gas stations" along the trans-Canada highway"

bus and taxi companies should be demanding for all-electric, battery-powered vehicles within cities

hybrid cars are a half measure....the reason they cost so much is the need to integrate 2 different drive train systems....all electric would be safer and cheaper

I don't know, I sorta like Nwfl...looks like a phonetic spelling of the sound a dog makes in its sleep.

That's NOT the abbreviation for "Newfoundland and Labrador".

Funny how the lefties in this country get more outraged about hydro developments in China or South America than in their own back yard.

Meanwhile, Labrador still doesn't have a highway, most of the jobs from Voisey's Bay are going to Newfoundland, now Danny Williams wants to suck another few billion out of the region on another capitalist-imperialist venture... where is your proletarian outrage?

The July 11th edition of the St. John's Telegram has a front page article on the anger felt over the lack of paved roads in Labrador.

Interestingly, it mentions a lot of the blame must fall on Joey Smallwood: "Pye said Joey Smallwood was dead set against a highway extending towards Quebec and that mindset stuck around with successive governments". That's a direct quote from the article. Another: "Talk of separation in Labrador is linked to issues like inferior roads".

There might be an online link - it's a three part article. Will have a look, maybe tomorrow - going to bed soon.

Some time, I'll dig up my direct quote from Smallwood about "not one red copper" being spent on a highway to link Labrador to horrible, horrible, Quebec.

Unfortunately, the mindset hasn't changed. This guy is now in charge of doling out the red coppers:

http://www.hoa.gov.nl.ca/hoa/business/hansard/44th,%205th/h03-04-10.htm

MR. SULLIVAN: But, the main highway certainly is well along and, hopefully, over the next while we will see some work and a strong inroads made between Cartwright and back to the Lake Melville area. I think it is vital for communication. It is vital to bring the people of Labrador closer to the Island portion of the Province, not only physically, but in all aspects. It is important. We are part of one Province. We want people there to feel a strong part of our Province. I think we have to do things that would bring us closer together, not facilitate the movement of goods and all services through Quebec into our Province. The more we can bring it together, the more positive it is for our future and the future of Labrador; and the needs, too, of Labrador, in particular, because it is a particularly expensive area to visit. It is expensive for people there.

Now, this is a member of the SAME government that just blew a pile of money to study a fixed link between Labrador and Newfoundland, to better connect Newfoundland to the mainland.

How these morons think they can better link Newfoundland to the mainland, without also linking Labrador and Quebec -- PERISH THE THOUGHT!!! -- is beyond me.

Jesus. Why do Newfoundland politicians fear Quebec so much? Don't they realise the potential market in Quebec (and the rest of Canada) for products from Newfoundland/Labrador? BTW, many Lower North Shore folks here in Quebec buy their ATV's and skidoos (and a few cars and trucks) from Newfoundland and Labrador because of lower taxes than Quebec. Quebec is pissed off, because it's missing out on the taxes.

Actually, I do recall that there is at least one proposal to extend 138 from Natashquan all the way to Old Fort Bay (there already is a road from Old Fort Bay, Quebec, right to Red Bay, Labrador). The only folks who have a copy opf the proposal on the coast are Richmond Monger in Chevery and Brian Evans, the Mayor of La Tabatiere. Brian was supposed to get it scanned onto CD's and make copies. I'm informed that PM the PM said in Sept-Iles two years ago (or maybe last year???) that a road connecting all the coast was a priority. Problem is, PM the PM has too many priorities.

Then what is it? You seem to be good at rudely dismissing others attempts, and it isn't like I'm the only one using that (sorry if it's JUST newfoundland, is there an abbreviation that includes labdrador?)

Nfld. diocese apologizes for sexual abuse
