Thanks josh. lovely:

Call me naïve, but I hold with hypocrisy. Everything known about Bush apart from his political rhetoric suggests belief in a conventional rich man's God. His idea of paradise is a country club golf course. His public religiosity is precisely calculated to enthrall fundamentalist
Christians whose failure to turn out in 1992 led to his father's defeat--the only Armageddon Junior seriously anticipates.

I wish I shared Lyons' "optimism" that it's only hypocrisy or cynicism.

I don't because his reason for believing that is W is a shallow, country-club Christian. This may be true but unfortunately the people who are actually making policy are genuine apocalyptic nutcases, and W is only too happy to go along.

One of the most powerful people in the Bush administration is Lynn Cheney, and she is totally scary. I see her handprints over a lot of administration policies. She has kept a low profile since her husband was selected, but this just adds to my impression she is one of the most powerful movers in this administration.
