TV addiction
quote:
In experiments, families have volunteered or been paid to stop viewing, typically for a week or a month. Many could not complete the period of abstinence. Some fought, verbally and physically. Anecdotal reports from some families that have tried the annual "TV turn-off" week in the U.S. tell a similar story.

When we were redecorating the apartment, the tv stayed turned off for about a week. I loved it. I read a bunch. My gf hated it. She didn't know what to do with herself. Afterwards, she demanded that we get cable.

Wanna talk about it M'boy?

When we first moved in, we only had the cat, two cups, two plates, two forks, a spoon, a pot and an air mattress with a blanket. For almost two weeks. We went to the Book Market and the Book Den. It was bliss.

We do have a tv now, but no cable. We only watch Enterprise, the Nature of Things and some Simpsons. We'll occaisionally turn other things on if we're alone. I used to watch a lot of TV, but I've not felt better since I reduced it.

To celebrate the week, I'll read Brave New World.

What are you guys going to do?

I read while she watches "A Wedding Story" on TLC (which no longer stands for The Learning Channel, incidentally).

It doesn't? Not shocking. I'll read NG if I want to learn something.

I used to watch it, years ago, until I realised that it's just adding to the heartache and stress that many weddings cause women and perpetuating a predatory industry. That and it's crap. Oh, I will say that I will occaisionally watch a Baby Story on my break, I do it for educational purposes though, making notes. I want to be a midwife some day and document the horror that is the American way of Birth much of the time. Most of the 30 minutes is spent gritting my teeth.

Umm... btw, does she just really like weddings, or is that a BIG HINT?

I just quit watching TV by the time I was living on my own. Even when I was still living with the 'rents, TV-watching was limited to Star Trek: The Next Generation and the original series.

So, you haven't seen Enterprise?

Eugh. No. I quit after Deep Space Nine. Paramount needs to just rest on its laurels and stop trying to milk the Star Trek crowd for more dough.

I loved Deep Space Nine. Voyager annoyed me. I love Enterprise.

The next movie looks like a fine opportunity ruined, but I've liked all three TNG movies so far.

DrC,

I LOVED the NG, I didn't give Deep Space a chance, hated Voyager, but, Enterprise is really good, I strongly recommend you give it a try. The concept is really neat. The Prime Directive hasn't been written yet, so they just go stumbling onto planets, the characters are developing into really interesting souls, and there's really fresh tension between the humans and the vulcans, as this is only a while after First Contact. The ship is very small and basic, people are still scared stiff of teleporting, and the Captain has already kissed an alien! I was very wary, but it's been pleasantly surprizing.
