Study: brain responses different in gays & straight men

quote:
(New York City) The brains of gay men respond more like women's when they react to a male sex hormone according to a new study that adds to the debate over nature versus nurture.

I wonder, do you think findings of physiological difference b/w straights and gays is on balance a good thing for gay rights?

Seems to me it could be, because at least it undermines a lot of homophobic ntions like being afraid that being exposed to gay positive messages will turn your kids gay, or other odious crap.

On the other hand, findings of biological bases for gender difference (male/female brains, etc) can reinforce gender stereotypes that are in fact social in nature.

Mush: good points.

I'd add that the inference is that being gay by choice (nurture) is less legitimate than being gay from nature. So those gays that have male respose to hormones can be 'cured'?

The study is a scientific one than in itself has value. My concern, however, is that gays shouldn't have to justify their sexual orientation. What if the study (or some other study) had shown the reverse? Are gays any less gay? No.

Scientifically the differences are legitimate inquiry but there is no reason for any person to have to explain their Gayness anymore than their Blackness or their gender.
