It's a very difficult thing to do. It becomes harder for someone to get coverage because the media worries about showing favouritism to a former member of their ranks. Anne Lagace Dowson is a perfect example. She doesn't get the coverage she deserves in a high profile riding like Westmount Ville-Marie.

Most journalist wouldn't even bother...when you make your living by asking other people questions, why would you want the headache of trying to come up with solutions?

That's the exact reason a journalist in politics can make a difference! If they're willing to make the necessary sacrifices their background can be a huge advantage.

I'll tell you: I'm much more favourable to having more journalists and LESS lawyers and businessmen in parliament (they're essential, to be sure, but far too numerous!).

At least as a journalist, your pre-political incarnation is to gather as much information as possible, whereas in other professions people tend to become very specialized in their savoir.

Anne Lagacé Dowson and Ryan Cleary (St. John's-Mount Pearl) are of course the very type of journalists who can bring knowledge of every issue to the house of commons.
