From Wednesday's Globe and Mail

Canada is to be shut out from the work of a new international consortium of scientists that plans to clone human embryos for stem-cell research.

Scientists from South Korea, Britain and the United States are to announce in Seoul today the formation of a World Stem Cell Foundation. Its aim is to collect stem cells from cloned human embryos and sell them to researchers -- many of whom are banned from cloning in their own countries.

This is really a big shame. We should be actively attempting to be a world leader in this technology. Is any political party in Canada actually attempting to do something about our lagging behind? I haven't heard any politician comment on this issue.

I thought that Canada was very active in stem cell research. For example, the research group they have at the Health Sciences Centre in Winnipeg. Maybe I was misinformed? As well as the unit at the University of Alberta?

Well we're active, but it appears the rules and regulations on stem cell research are much more restrictive then many other countries.Stem cell policies

We aren't allowed to clone stem cells here. Its a moral issue to some I guess, creating a "human" life just to experiment and discard it later. I don't see a few dozen cells being more human then a piece of tree bark myself.
