I'm American but live happily and permanently in Canada now. I aimed the article at a more general audience, because most Americans generally only see flag burnings and other "anti-American" things on TV newscasts about foreign protests.
A lot of other people are just too busy to follow what's going on (it is fairly complex.) Others get too depressed from reading the paper (which generally focuses on bad news.) There are many facets to the problem.

Did you expect more of a response? I thought the article was excellent, and said so, in two places. I've seen other excellent essays get little or no response. Most people would rather write than read, rather speak than listen; rather give their off-the-cuff opinion on a current event than reflect on their own, or someone else's, long-term strategy. That's the nature of forums. They're immediate, personal, ephemeral... bloody useless. But sometimes fun.
