Is it just me, or does anyone else find Mike Constable's cartoon regarding the WTC "bookends" rather offensive?

I actually thought it was funny...
But I have a black sense of humour at the best of times.

Well, I guess in a certain way it is (we would live in a sad, sad world if we tried to censor humour).
I'm just wondering whether a cartoon showing, say, a lineup of native Americans, on crutches, heading towards a medical clinic displaying a sign that said "Wounded Knee Clinic" would be considered okay. Or a bag of Hiroshima Brand barbeque briquets.

I think of it more as a dig at all the merchandisers seeking to profit off of 9-11 with garish souveniers. But hey, that's just me.

My reaction was in three stages: 1) when the bookends come out, I thought ha ha, right on!!!...but maybe it's a bit in bad taste 2) We learn the origin of the bookends, Oh...right... this is what's in bad taste, this and the media circus and the narcisism... 3) Then I notice that Mr. Constable has included the three main protagonists in that little cartoon and linked them to provocative symbols: U.S.-technology all the things symbolized bt the WTC. Muslim culture- the arts, learning (i.e. Culture). Afghanistan- Tragedy, war... I found it deeply affecting, and it made me think about the events of 9-11, even though I had decided to keep it out of my mind as a rebellion against the orchestrated emotional manipuylation pouring out of the media. You are an artist, Mike Constable.

Yeah, black_dog, that was my reading of it, too. Merchandising, and also, there's been a lot of "remembering" of people in the WTC towers, but very little acknowledgement that a lot of Afghanis who had nothing to do with any of it died in the aftermath/retaliation. Perhaps that was part of the point.
I think if you had a valid statement to make with your bbq briquets, that would be a different situation entirely.
