Will there be snow for the 2010 Olympics? Or will governments run up debts just to make “snow?” Fine, Whistler’s quite “high” and weather is always a roll of the dice, but the dice are getting loaded to the warm side. How long before global warming makes the Winter Olympics defunct?

With outdoor rink conditions getting steadily worse over the years, sports like hockey will become a past-time for the elite who can afford the indoor arena fees. Going, going, gone will be people with fond childhood memories of hanging out at the neighbourhood rink or local frozen pond. Ice hockey has a future of being an elite sport, no longer of the people.

Sure, hard, cold spells are still not unheard of, to accompany the new hot spells. I figure the fluctuating extremes are due to glaciers melting. If the Gulf Stream changes as predicted, maybe in 20 years England will enjoy a stint as world ice hockey champs in future. Just a little dystopic speculation.

Snow, brought to you by __________ Corporation, Proud Olympic Sponsors.

"Oh, thank you _____________Corporation, you benevolent people who made it possible for us to watch athletes frolick in the snow!"

Golf is probably the most elite sport (and expensive). Yet, at least in the USA, they can't build enough golf courses to satisfy the demand.

But, hockey in Canada won't die for a very, very long time.
