This is insane: 'Street racing' in a Volvo on the way to daycareexcerpt:
Is this why the $10,000 speeding ticket was invented? A mom doing 101 km/h through a school zone as pupils were arriving for the day?
That's what Toronto police are asking after they clocked the middle-age mom in her Volvo speeding through a school zone at 8:30 a.m. Thursday past a school and daycare. She was on her way home to take one of her children to daycare.
excerpt:
The Volvo-driving mom – pulled over as she was heading north on Mt. Pleasant Blvd. north of Bloor St. in a 50 km/h zone – would have needed a football field to stop, Sgt. Steve O'Donovan calculated: three-quarters of a second to perceive the hazard, another three-quarters of a second to react, and 54 metres to stop on dry asphalt.

The charges bring to 547 the number of drivers charged in the city since the Ontario street-racing law came into effect 11 months ago, Burrows said.
Automatic suspensions under the new Ontario law stand at 7,939, ministry of transportation statistics show.
That's an average of 24 a day.
Holy crap. This reminds me of when I was in Washington DC in 2002 crossing a residential street on a green light, and a guy yakking on his cell phone blew right past me against a red light, just inches away from me, going at least double the speed limit. I could have easily been killed.
What's going on? Why the callous indifference of drivers these days?
