Okay, so how exactly does this lineage to Charlemagne thing work again? I've heard twice now on babble that if you're of European descent, you're almost guaranteed to be descended from Charlemagne. How do you figure?

I googled a bit, but didn't find an explanation (and I don't remember where that thread is from before). Someone wanna explain it to me?

Well near as I can figure, as you go back through your ancestors, Grand parents, Great Grandparents etc.,the number of ancestors multiplies geometrically with each generation. Pretty soon your number of ancestors exceeds the population of the earth at that time by a considerable degree. Thus there is a lot of overlapping in ancestors. Now particularly if your lineage appears restricted, as is mine, to North West Europe, that narrows things even more. Beyond a certain point then, shared ancestory with anyone becomes statistically very likely, including equally, Charlemagne and Piers the Plowman.

Does that clarify things at all cousin?

There was an article in the Atlantic Monthly last year with the teaser line:

quote:
The mathematical study of genealogy indicates that everyone in the world is descended from Nefertiti and Confucius, and everyone of European ancestry is descended from Muhammad and Charlemagne

Notice it says "mathematical." It's a bit complicated, and I'm not sure I understand the argument altogether. But all mathematical models have to have assumptions, and here's a key one...

quote:
Chang's model incorporates one crucial assumption: random mating in the part of the world under consideration. For example, every person in Europe would have to have an equal chance of marrying every other European of the opposite sex. As Chang acknowledges in his paper, random mating clearly does not occur in reality; an Englishman is much likelier to marry a woman from England than a woman from Italy, and a princess is much likelier to marry a prince than a pauper. These departures from randomness must push back somewhat the date of Europeans' most recent common ancestor.

Anyway I recommend reading the whole thing, which I'm going to re-do.

Edited to add:

... or, just go with oldgoat's succinct summary. Too tired to think...
