There is often, but not always, an -ism for each -ist when the -ist is an agent noun. You can be a cyclist, but I'm not so sure there's such a word as cyclism. -ists who study things often have an associated -ology, not an -ism.

I think, for the purposes of this discussion, we'd have to operationalise what "is" means. Does it mean "existing within a present or past physical reality, either as an artifact in the English (or any) language or as a yet-unarticulated but nonetheless real concept existing in the mind of some speaker", or does "is" refer to some state, independent of present time or an obvious physical reality, but still existing within the Universe as we understand it?

I don't think this discussion will go anywhere until this highly controversial and divisive point is settled.
