Interestingly enough, I remember hearing that while in Canada and the United States, Women, on average, tended to be more liberal and men tended to be more conservative. However in Britain and a few other European and Australasian countries, the trend was reversed. In Britain, more women voted for the Conservative party (I think this was done no more recently than the 70's. Actually, if memory serves, it was 50's or earlier) and it was atributed to a desire for a stable, "traditional" family unit, with certain moral standards being enforced by the state, while more men voted for the Labour party because they worked in the mines, and factories, and whatnot, and were more preoccupied with workers rights. I can't remember where I heard this, damn my awful memory!

Really-What's with this "stinky hippy" crap?I live in a tiny village. We are stereo-typed,here,whether we like it or not.At 42,(even though I was 9 in '69)I am definitely in the "Old Hippie" category.I don't stink, nor do any of my male "hippie" friends. My partner is 30 years old.He wears his hair in a long pony-tail and has been classified as a "hippie".(He doesn't stink, either)In reality,he is very traditional in his views of women, politics, etc. If I had to put him in a category,I'd say "Redneck" might cover it.In our eclectic group of friends,I'd say most menfolk, especially the 19-30 group, are Right-Wing and the women lean to the left.

The UK used to have a sitcom called "Citizen Smith" where the lead character was a down-with-the-people lefty rebel (but not really of course), it was all so he could bed the women he could meet and charm with his Che Guavara persona.Of course, lots of opportunity for anti-lefty jokes, but it was really funny (does no-one any harm to have a laugh at how ludicrous it can all seem!!)... But, I do think there is an element of that in some of the people I have met (though the more that lean this way, even if they don't fully understand the logic of a left position, the better!) On the anti-war marches in London, I loved the sheer variety on offer, there were all the stereotypes, but there was so much more, there was a real wide variety of people with a wide variety of interests, and some impressive leaflets about everything under the sun. Communities, cyclists, mad cossies, mad hair, music, the works. Even the police were friendly. Though they can't fucking count!!! ) I remember as I walked, thinking, even if I hadn't thought through the logic of my position and why I disagreed with the action, just the comparison between those who did support the war and those who didn't would have persuaded me. Just sad that in times of media-hyped crisis, the people turn to the BBC, the government and the military. Because it has always been that way... and they are frightened of what might happen if they don't let the powerful do what the powerful always do. Standing in Trafalgar Square, in the crowd of 100,000, the speakers included Tony Benn, Tarig Ali, a young Muslim girl from Afghanistan now in the UK, and others, I felt proud of myself. It wasn't the first, nor the last, time I would stand up for what I believe in, but it felt the most important so far in my life (I am 29). Bring on September 28th.... (I know, I AM Citizen Smith... tee hee hee...)
