Are there really more left wing women than men? Dr. Conway seems to think so in another thread in this category. Maybe it's true. But I still think there are way more men than women involved in politics.

For some strange reasons I have only ever "dated" one left wing guy. ( and he was NOT even a feminist ) They are hard to come by. It must be the left wing guys I know because it seems they are either stinky hippies, or are gay. I am not KIDDING.

Public opinion research bears this out - at least in North America, there is a large gender gap in political opinion and party support.

I don't know about left wing, or wings, or labels of any kind. I do believe that women generally would prefer nobody goes hungry or sleeps on a sidewalk, if we can offer an alternative. I do believe that women generally are pragmatic and sensible and don't let ideology get between them and fairness. I believe that women generally would prefer people to behave well rather then badly. I belive that women generally would prefer no child to go without sufficient nourishment of body, mind or soul, just because it doesn't make a fast profit to feed them. I beleive women generally would prefer that men work out their ego/territorial/philosophical differences in verbal, rather than physical (especially if the physical involves the destruction of major land-masses) confrontation.

Shit, yes! Most women are left-wing, if that means less fighting and more help with the dishes.

Interestingly enough, I remember hearing that while in Canada and the United States, Women, on average, tended to be more liberal and men tended to be more conservative.

However in Britain and a few other European and Australasian countries, the trend was reversed. In Britain, more women voted for the Conservative party (I think this was done no more recently than the 70's. Actually, if memory serves, it was 50's or earlier) and it was atributed to a desire for a stable, "traditional" family unit, with certain moral standards being enforced by the state, while more men voted for the Labour party because they worked in the mines, and factories, and whatnot, and were more preoccupied with workers rights. I can't remember where I heard this, damn my awful memory!

Really-What's with this "stinky hippy" crap?I live in a tiny village. We are stereo-typed,here,whether we like it or not.At 42,(even though I was 9 in '69)I am definitely in the "Old Hippie" category.I don't stink, nor do any of my male "hippie" friends. My partner is 30 years old.He wears his hair in a long pony-tail and has been classified as a "hippie".(He doesn't stink, either)In reality,he is very traditional in his views of women, politics, etc. If I had to put him in a category,I'd say "Redneck" might cover it.In our eclectic group of friends,I'd say most menfolk, especially the 19-30 group, are Right-Wing and the women lean to the left.

It's 2002. No man should have a pony tail. It's the mullets' big brother.

I know plenty of lefty guys with jobs, showers and such. We all want to know where all the left-wing girls are.

Hmm interesting Valley Girl. I wonder why that is?

As for "stinky hippy" - I never thought of that terminology until I heard it from my right wing friends. THEN, I went to the G8 protests in Calgary and boy did everyone ever REEK! I prolly did too )

It does seem like leftist politics and poor hygeine have become almost inseperable. I say: leftists of the world: bathe! You have nothing to lose but your stank.

The UK used to have a sitcom called "Citizen Smith" where the lead character was a down-with-the-people lefty rebel (but not really of course), it was all so he could bed the women he could meet and charm with his Che Guavara persona.

Of course, lots of opportunity for anti-lefty jokes, but it was really funny (does no-one any harm to have a laugh at how ludicrous it can all seem!!)...

But, I do think there is an element of that in some of the people I have met (though the more that lean this way, even if they don't fully understand the logic of a left position, the better!)

On the anti-war marches in London, I loved the sheer variety on offer, there were all the stereotypes, but there was so much more, there was a real wide variety of people with a wide variety of interests, and some impressive leaflets about everything under the sun. Communities, cyclists, mad cossies, mad hair, music, the works. Even the police were friendly. Though they can't fucking count!!! ) I remember as I walked, thinking, even if I hadn't thought through the logic of my position and why I disagreed with the action, just the comparison between those who did support the war and those who didn't would have persuaded me. Just sad that in times of media-hyped crisis, the people turn to the BBC, the government and the military. Because it has always been that way... and they are frightened of what might happen if they don't let the powerful do what the powerful always do.

Standing in Trafalgar Square, in the crowd of 100,000, the speakers included Tony Benn, Tarig Ali, a young Muslim girl from Afghanistan now in the UK, and others, I felt proud of myself. It wasn't the first, nor the last, time I would stand up for what I believe in, but it felt the most important so far in my life (I am 29).

Bring on September 28th....

(I know, I AM Citizen Smith... tee hee hee...)

I fancy myself as a leftist guerilla in the concrete jungles fighting for the plight of, well, uh, me, I guess. And in this jungle, I got to lie low because the government troops are everywhere. I don't get the opportunity to shower all the time, and I make no excuses about it. A moment lolly gagging in the storm water pond could mean a bullet through my head.
