NEW YORK - A team of scientists working in Southeast Asia has discovered a new mammal resembling a rat, but in a rare move they had to create a new scientific family to categorize it.

Goodness. Weren't we just reading yesterday, or the day before, that a new sub-species of fox has been found, and in this neck of the woods, too (Viet Nam?)?

Clap paws, anyway.

I emailed the CBC this morning lambasting them for calling this a "discovery."

It's not a discovery, folks. The local people already had a word for this critter, and in fact, they were selling them at the local market.

Calling it a discovery is like saying no one knew about it until it was classified by western scientific nomenclature. What rot.

True, though the fact that it belongs to a new family might qualify as a discovery in its own right.

It looks adorable!

Then again, I'm about the only person I know that thinks that rats look really cuddley.
