This is a "good news" story. I am attaching a story that appears today in the Toronto Star about the 60th anniversary of the Canadian Jewish Congress' program bringing over Holocaust orphans to Canada.

Jewish war orphans

I also want to note the incredible work of an agency I have a close link with, Jewish Family and Child Service, which played an important role in providing child welfare and foster services to these war orphans. The Canadian immigration policy while finally opening its doors to Jewish refugees in 1948 insisted that the Jewish community provide all resources necessary for their care. This is a both a hopeful story and a cautionary tale, a warning if you will, about unprogressive immigration policies.

Beyond the challenges of working to change racist immigration policies and find a safe country for the young orphans, l'm sure relations weren't always easy at first between foster families and war-toughened teens. Fortunately most managed not to become as permanently screwed up as the brilliant but twisted director Roman Polanski (the ghetto street kid who sold the Spielman family a caramel for an exhorbitant sum was a cameo self-reference)

There was a similar, but not identical story on this anniversary in the Montreal Gazette.

Someone very dear to me was born in those DP camps, 60 years ago in a few weeks. One interesting account of them is found in Ruth Gay's book "Safe Among the Germans". http://yalepress.yale.edu/yupbooks/book.asp?isbn=9780300092714
Quite the irony of history.

Quite so Lagatta, the report (and thank you for this Prophit)I read today was very moving. Kudos to CP for their research and to these orphans for their story. It was a real eye-opener

I think anyone should be allowed into Canada, as long as they are somehow connected to large sums of money.

Money is what makes our country tick, and any other criteria for immigration would be unfair and unprogressive.

So you'd make an orphan of me for writing something that isn't what you're used to reading?

How does this make you not a tyrant?

Thank gord the troll is gone. Laughing at homeless people, and at kids who survived genocide.

Corneille, the very popular Québec singer, is an orphan of the Rwandan genocide. Yep, he was more than edgy at first as well, as uncle Léo Kalinda of Radio-Canada fame has testified.
