I thoughtthis article was pretty useful in spelling out some of the basic distinctions in brain activity (and non-activity). I don't think it's the final word, though...we'll probably find some other distinctions between life and death down the road sometime.

This is very useful to me and to many others, I'm sure -- thanks, brebis noire.

I am still interested in knowing in more detail how brain death is measured and judged. I've read a lot, but it is so important that the experts continue to write out their specialized knowledge in terms that lay people can follow and that yet do not oversimplify or condescend. This is well done, written at just about the right level -- I just want more.
