Righteous might. It is being driven through my mind over and over again. Retribution, pay back, escalation... ... terrible scenarios are going through my mind.

I wouldn't trust City to keep from reporting outrageous rumours. I'd stick to Newsworld, if you have cable. We're on ABCnews here because that's the only website we could connect to. BBC would be good for an international perspective.

About an hour and a half ago (10:25 EDT) CTV reported in passing that "a Palestinian group" had claimed responsibility. But there was no confirmation or follow-up.Michael McAuliffe of CBC Radio is now (11:50 EDT) saying that the US State Department on Friday issued a rare "world-wide caution." "Over the past several months the US State Department ... has received unconfirmed information... that US citizens may be in danger of attacks from terrorist groups under the direction of Osama Bin Laden. US Government facilities world-wide remain in a high state of alert." (transcription approximate -- he also quoted them saying US military personnel in Korea and Japan might be in danger of attack). Other than that he's speculating. He says mostly such warnings deal with specific countries, whereas these warnings were non-specific. I'd recommend ABC TV coverage, Peter Jennings' brief flare-up notwithstanding. [ September 11, 2001: Message edited by: 'lance ]

September 11, 2001 Posted: 1457 GMT NEW YORK (CNN) -- Terrorists struck the United States Tuesday morning in harrowing, widespread attacks that included at least three commercial jet crashes into significant buildings. • In the first attack, a plane hit the north tower of the World Trade Center in Manhattan shortly before 9 a.m., followed by another plane into the second tower about 20 minutes later. Both towers later collapsed. • About an hour later, a plane crashed into the Pentagon, part of which later collapsed. • American Airlines told CNN that it lost two planes in "tragic accidents:" Flight 11 from Boston with 81 passengers and 11 crew aboard and Flight 77 from Washington Dulles airport with 58 passengers and six crew aboard. Both planes were en route to Los Angeles • United Airlines Flight 93 airliner headed from Newark, New Jersey, to San Francisco, crashed near Somerset, Pennsylvania -- police said initial reports indicated no survivors. It was not known if this was connected to the attacks. United also said it was "deeply concerned" about Flight l75 from Boston to Los Angeles. • The Pentagon, the White House, the State Department, the Justice Department, the Capitol, the CIA and all other government buildings in Washington evacuated. • In the first ever national ground stop of aircraft, all flights nationwide have been stopped at their departure airports. • All international flights were diverted to Canada. • Israel has evacuated all its missions around the world. • President Bush cancelled an appearance in Florida to return to Washington, calling the crashes "apparent terrorist attacks" and "a national tragedy." • In Chicago, the Sears Tower was evacuated; United Nations in New York evacuated. • The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta was evacuated. CDC was preparing bioterrorism teams in case they become necessary. • The New York Port Authority said it had closed all bridges and tunnels into the city. • New York's Bellevue Hospital was designated command central for handling the catastrophe. Several hospitals have already reported receiving victims with burns and head injuries. • U.S. stock markets were closed after the New York attacks.

CFRA again: The Ogdensberg border crossing is open again. Ottawa International Airport has been re-opened, but no flights are allowed to leave.Edited to say: Geez, what a way for Rudolph Guliani(sp?) to end his term as NYC mayor. I just saw him on tv walking down the street, TRYING to answer questions, but events were happening too fast for him. He just told reporters "how about you just follow me and see what happens". CBC Radio reports that the Peace Arch border crossing is still open in both directions. Apparently the Canadian customs officials are being even more vigilant than their American colleagues. On the subject of Parliament, CBC Radio also added that the evacuation of Parliament Hill was likely due to a "heightened state of awareness." Not to speculate overmuch, but from my experience of the Hill, ordinary security there is not extreme. On any given day there might be a number of vehicles parked around, with no obvious connection to parliamentary business. I don't think there's much likelihood of an attack there. The Mayor of New York fears a horrendous number of people have been killed. Orders evacuation of lower Manhattan.Lawrence Eagleburger, Sec State for the first Bush presidency on CBC: "The US now has to go to war against terrorists". Don't these people realize they are playing into Dubya's hands? There are soldiers on the streets now, it won't be just Islamic militants that will be targetted. Has anyone heard about a call for blood donors by the Canadian Blood Agency?

I've just made my appointment to give blood this aft - the fellow at Canadian Blood Services says that just after 10 a.m. calls started pouring in. If you can, it's probably a good idea to donate in your area. It's a harsh cataylst for a necessary action. You can find information at Canadian Blood Services. The pace of events seems to have slowed a bit, as of course it had to eventually. Of necessity, the media people and experts are substituting speculation, background, and sidebars for reporting. I'm finally heading off to work, me.
