Who bankrolled this? Are we sure this is middle east?

I wouldn't trust City to keep from reporting outrageous rumours. I'd stick to Newsworld, if you have cable.

We're on ABCnews here because that's the only website we could connect to.

BBC would be good for an international perspective.

I just think it's important for folks not able to get news elsewhere that this thread sticks to what is being reported.

About an hour and a half ago (10:25 EDT) CTV reported in passing that "a Palestinian group" had claimed responsibility. But there was no confirmation or follow-up.

Michael McAuliffe of CBC Radio is now (11:50 EDT) saying that the US State Department on Friday issued a rare "world-wide caution."

"Over the past several months the US State Department ... has received unconfirmed information... that US citizens may be in danger of attacks from terrorist groups under the direction of Osama Bin Laden. US Government facilities world-wide remain in a high state of alert." (transcription approximate -- he also quoted them saying US military personnel in Korea and Japan might be in danger of attack).

Other than that he's speculating. He says mostly such warnings deal with specific countries, whereas these warnings were non-specific.

I'd recommend ABC TV coverage, Peter Jennings' brief flare-up notwithstanding.

NEW YORK (CNN) -- Terrorists struck the United States Tuesday morning in harrowing, widespread attacks that included at least three commercial jet crashes into significant buildings.

• In the first attack, a plane hit the north tower of the World Trade Center in Manhattan shortly before 9 a.m., followed by another plane into the second tower about 20 minutes later. Both towers later collapsed.

• About an hour later, a plane crashed into the Pentagon, part of which later collapsed.

• American Airlines told CNN that it lost two planes in "tragic accidents:" Flight 11 from Boston with 81 passengers and 11 crew aboard and Flight 77 from Washington Dulles airport with 58 passengers and six crew aboard. Both planes were en route to Los Angeles

• United Airlines Flight 93 airliner headed from Newark, New Jersey, to San Francisco, crashed near Somerset, Pennsylvania -- police said initial reports indicated no survivors. It was not known if this was connected to the attacks. United also said it was "deeply concerned" about Flight l75 from Boston to Los Angeles.

• The Pentagon, the White House, the State Department, the Justice Department, the Capitol, the CIA and all other government buildings in Washington evacuated.

• In the first ever national ground stop of aircraft, all flights nationwide have been stopped at their departure airports.

• All international flights were diverted to Canada.

• Israel has evacuated all its missions around the world.

• President Bush cancelled an appearance in Florida to return to Washington, calling the crashes "apparent terrorist attacks" and "a national tragedy."

• In Chicago, the Sears Tower was evacuated; United Nations in New York evacuated.

• The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta was evacuated. CDC was preparing bioterrorism teams in case they become necessary.

• The New York Port Authority said it had closed all bridges and tunnels into the city.

• New York's Bellevue Hospital was designated command central for handling the catastrophe. Several hospitals have already reported receiving victims with burns and head injuries.

• U.S. stock markets were closed after the New York attacks.

Edited to say: Geez, what a way for Rudolph Guliani(sp?) to end his term as NYC mayor. I just saw him on tv walking down the street, TRYING to answer questions, but events were happening too fast for him. He just told reporters "how about you just follow me and see what happens".

Well shit, my buddy at the brokerage house tells me that most of the top financial minds in the US work at the WTC. The US stock exchange probably won't be opened for at least two weeks, otherwise there would be a SERIOUS crash.

ABC News: One US Air flight is still unaccounted for. All former presidents are secure. Perhaps over 200 fire-fighters in NYC are unaccounted for.

News From FOX 2, Detroit, MI

Security in "Full Force" at all Federal Buildings in Michigan. Employees voluntarily "evacuated". The Federal Court Building is also officially open, but empty of all employees. The FBI is on scene for security. All US flights shut down. 2 United Airlines lost, 2 American Airlines planes lost.

Windsor tunnel shut down for hours this AM. Soon, cars with US plates only will be allowed into US and Canadian plated cars will be allowed into Canada. There are larger than normal numbers of armed guards at border. 5 minutes ago Ambassador bridge closed, traffic jams are MASSIVE. Reporter says that reopening the tunnel even in a limitted capacity will be nearly impossible. It is also reported that it "will be quite some time" before the border is reopened.

CBC Radio reports that the Peace Arch border crossing is still open in both directions. Apparently the Canadian customs officials are being even more vigilant than their American colleagues.

On the subject of Parliament, CBC Radio also added that the evacuation of Parliament Hill was likely due to a "heightened state of awareness."

Not to speculate overmuch, but from my experience of the Hill, ordinary security there is not extreme. On any given day there might be a number of vehicles parked around, with no obvious connection to parliamentary business.

I don't think there's much likelihood of an attack there.

I've read that the TSE halted trading after dropping 296 points and similar crashes have happened in markets in Europe. Markets won't trade in the US tomorrow either. All I can say is wow. The business of America is business, but America isn't doing business now.

This day has been truly horrifying. A large part of the New York skyline is just no longer there, the Pentagon, of all places, has been partly destroyed, and now I hear of crashes in Pittsburgh and San Francisco. It's surreal. History is in the making, people. All we can do is hope to stay out of the way.

Judy, where did you hear that? I've been glued to ABCnews live and he's said it was a small plane all morning.

Edited: I retract the above statement.

ABCNews: An American Airlines flight crashed into the Pentagon.

Well, there's speculation and there's educated guessing. Who has the resources and demonstrated will to do this type of thing? I would say not even any other state has the will to do this type of thing. There's only one group, and that's Bin Laden's. Bin Laden has outright said he wants to attack Americans, and he has done so before, showing callous disregard for the lives of not only his targets, but innocent bystanders (the 200 Africans he killed in the Nairobi bombing). He's clearly a fanatic.

OTOH security on domestic flights is notoriously lax -- why? has anyone ever asked why there is a different standard of security for internal and international flights? -- and it could very well be some organized domestic nutjobs are behind this, though somehow I doubt it. They usually target the government. The targets chosen today symbolize US power, and that suggests that it's some outside group behind the attacks.

All sorts of itty-bitty factions are claiming responsibility according to TV reports but none of them sounds particularly realistic.

I'm hearing about another rumoured plane in Colerado. That would be six plus the car bomb.

I'm troubled by the automatic assumption this is from the Middle East. Obviously Bid Laden and Hussian are obvious suspects but this seems more likely to be domestic. After Oklamoma a group of Midele eastern men were arrested and tried in the media before it turned out to be the Militia (McVeigh and co). This hasn't even been floated and the focus is on attack froma foreign power, but could this not be US based?

CBC:Evacuation order in Vancouver airport, false alarm.
Another speculator: it has all the markings of Oslama bin Laden, but the it never uses suicide bombers except for the US Navy ship thing, and doesn’t do airport stuff. (plus they tried to blow up the World Trade center).
Colorado crash re-reported. Crash near Cinncinati, unconfirmed, army base near there.
This is well orchestrated, “military grade attack”.

This from the CNN site:

quote:
Afghanistan's Taliban ambassador to Pakistan has condemned the string of astonishing terrorist attacks on the United States.
"We want to tell the American children that Afghanistan feels your pain. We hope the courts find justice," ambassador Mullah Abdul Salam Zaeef said in a statement in Pakistan after America was hit by a series of attacks that have been called the worst since Pearl Harbor.

“Freedom itself was attacked this morning by a faceless coward” – Bush. He vows retribution.
He will protect Americans, and pledges prayer. “We will show the world we will pass this test. God Bless”
The Theocracy has spoken.

Estimate death toll, 20K-50K in New York.

Freedom itself was attacked this morning by faceless cowards. Freedom will be defended.

Make no mistake, about it, the United States will hunt down and punish those responsible for these coawardly acts.

Military is on high-alert status.

We will do whatever is necessary to protect America and Americans.

The resolve of our great nation is being tested, but make no mistake, we will pass this test.
