Quite often I do ponder the thought about, "What if the USA were to fall apart in the near future". You can't tell me it WON'T EVER happen, because you have to look at Great Empires in the past, and how they fell apart. If you look at the way the government is running the country at the moment, all the members are Scared paranoia is setting in. And the way they are headed, there won't be many Allies left to depend on. As for the Future, when they fall, will they still stay together, or will they split up into different countries ? And who would rise to power ? I would say the next best thing would be the EU, mainly because they have something going. The only problem here, is I think they NEED a bit MORE time to develop before they become any World Leader.Side Note, Do you think that one reason the USA is hoping for this War, so that the US Economy doesn't slip, and the Euro takes over ?

Of course it will. What happens afterward depends on how the fall comes about. I can think of several causes for the fall, each bringing different sequelae. It might fail due to political hubris - that is, the rest of the world gets fed up enough with US foreign policy to say No and keep saying No. In this case, the union will hold. If this happens within five years, the next great power is probably Europe; if it happens in 20 years' time, the next great power may well be China, or a coalition of Asian nations. Or, it might fail because of terrible economic policy. In this case, the union will continue as a moch looser federation of states. Economic collapse of the US might cause so much upheaval all over the world that no nation or coalition would be able to take its place right away. Then, the next great power may be the UN. Civil war is possible, too. This would certainly result in a division of the US into five or six regional entities. The cause of a civil war would most likely be economic decline (or collapse), coupled with total disenchantment with present foreign and domestic policy. In this case, the global consequences would be similar to the above. Most probable is a combination of the events i mentioned, plus an unknowable number of other factors, such as weather, epidemic, population, food and pollution crises. (Always assuming that the world survives the next five years.)
