Hmm, religion, atheism, religion as opiate of the people or atheists as Albanian commissars who would forcibly convert all places of worship to museums and public loos... And yet, many have not read or have forgotten the early passage by Karl Marx on "religion as the opiate of the people". It is not a condemnation of religion but an explanation of its power as consolation for the oppressed creature. (By the way, as to that other thread I can't access as it is TOO LONG, human beings are creatures...).

Wikapedia has a summary of the passage whence this quote is taken, and a link to the entire essay: http://encyclopedia.thefreedictionary.com/Opium%20of%20the%20people

I saw a documentary that showed how the Russian's maintained a lot of their churches during the iron curtain years. In Ukraine, too. I would say that a lot of the dilapidated conditions in that part of the world now has occurred since the 1980's.

Infrastructure is falling apart in the States for that matter. Olympic sized swimming pools and large sports complexes built during the cold war years are now falling apart as are their inner city schools, commuter rail service etc.
