There's been a persistent rumour that former NDP MP and former provincial NDP leader and MHA Jack Harris will run for the federal NDP in the upcoming federal election. I've also now just heard that both St. John's seats will be vacant. Norm Doyle announced months ago that he would not be running for reelection in St. John's East. The Globe and Mail reported today (at the bottom of a story about David Emerson not running again) that St. John's South--Mount Pearl member and cabinet minister Loyola Hearn is also expected to retire.

Do you think Jack Harris will run? For which seat? Are there any other good potential candidates out there? Who? What are their chances?

In Newfoundland you will want to be ready for "strategic voting" pieces on the CBC from your new radio reporter, Vic Adopia. He did a really nice scam here in BC in 2005/06. He had a woman named Roslyn Hart posing as a one time Svend Robinson campaign worker "who is now thinking she has to vote Liberal". And on and on it went.

Just to note:
"The NTV/Telelink poll shows NDP candidate Jack Harris has opened up a big lead in St. John's East. Telelink polled 526 likely voters during the weekend. A majority of respondents, 52.3%, said they plan to vote for Jack Harris on election day. Liberal candidate Walter Noel is a distant second with 8.7%. In a statistical tie for second is Conservative candidate Craig Westcott, who has 8.2%. Undecided are 30.4% of respondents, the lowest undecided rate of the three Avalon peninsula ridings.

The margin of error is +/-4.4 percentage points 19 times out of 20."

So - winning with 75% of decided voters...

A good day for the NDP in Newfoundland!
