A) I seriously doubt that you can compare a study done 30 years ago in a completely different social and political climate with a study today.

The fact that the results have changed could be answered simply by the fact that more is expected of men now in marriage. It is expected that they share the housework, childcare and all those other jobs that lead to stress and depression in married women.

B) What exactly is the point of this article other than another shot at those "ball busting feminists" who just don't understand our pain?

Good grief guys grow up.

Just curious too. Men are always bitching and chewing about how god awful marriage is, so why the hell do you propose?

Get a plastic doll, hire molly maid, and live happily ever after just you and your gel.

A BBC article based on the same study draws somewhat different conclusions:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/health/2291731.stm
and leaves it unclear whether the original study was flawed, or whether social change over the past 30 years has changed the outcomes.

Seems logical that having a companion would improve one's health and outlook - but it certainly doesn't mean that one is better off in an abusive relationship than alone!

Any study which arrives at conclusions about marriage based on reports concerning who is "depressed" simply does not have any scientific basis. There is no baseline, since what I consider "depressed" and what you consider "depressed" may not be the same.

And then, one would have to know what the alternatives are: is it isolation, communal living, serial monogamy?

And how depressed would everyone be in each of those states?
