The tales of the loo from Mohammad Khan, Michelle, Skdadl and others bring to mind the more general question of culturally-defined space and comfort/discomfort. Explored long ago (1959) by Edward Hall in his book on the anthropology of space in different cultures, "The Hidden Dimension". He later looked at cultural differences in business, diplomacy, travel and friendship not only between "Western" and "non-Western" cultures, but even among different "Western" cultures, for example French, Germans and Americans (in the US sense). Sure MK could think of similar differences among "Muslim" or "Asian" peoples, or Anuri between say, Inuit and Cree.

Another interesting aspect of this question to explore is how has it changed, in the light of greater exchanges among peoples and market-imposed globalisation?
