This Wednesday evening, Oct. 27, the moon is full and passes through the Earth's shadow. If the sky is clear, this should be a very pleasant sight as the moon dims. Depending on what is going on in Earth's atmosphere, the moon could appear charcoal-grey, rust-red, brick-red or orange. The moon will be totally eclipsed for about one hour and 20 minutes, and partially eclipsed for another hour or so before and after. The whole event is visible throughout most of Canada (and the Americas, and Western Europe and Africa), however in Western North America, including B.C. and Alberta, the moon will already be partially eclipsed as it rises in the East. For timing in your region, see the table below.

Thanks for the heads up. The timing is excellent for eastern North America (I'm in Montreal). Let's hope for clear weather!

Your forecast (so far) is for a mix of sun & cloud. Here in Toronto the outlook is cloudy, something that seems to happen for every major astronomical event.

In K-W they're forecasting "cloudy periods" for tonight. Here's hoping...

Unless there is a major clearing we won't be seeing a thing.

Every razzle frazzle time there is something like this it is cloudy here.

Start taking the occasional look... Starting about now the moon should gradually darken until totality starts in about an hour and a half.

Of course here in Toronto, the moon is already fully eclipsed ... by a thick blanket of clouds.

This page has links to live webcast images of the eclipse. If you click on the one from Carsten Arnholm in Norway, it sure looks like shading has begun.

I love modern astronomy ...

It puts it all into perspective (I'm having an introspective moment).

Interesting; now it's covered it is actually fairly brightand visible; I thought it would be pretty well dark. The shadow was more obvious when the moon was just partly covered.

The moon is now totally eclipsed (until 11:45pm EDT / 8:45pm PDT) for those of you lucky enough not to be clouded over.

Go outside and take a look!

Here in Toronto it's overcast...

When I look here at this webcast, the moon looks a deep reddish orange... Are any of you seeing that?

Well my window is a bit dirty. Just looked and there isn't much of the moon showing. It's true though covered, visible.

Just to add, I see the orange but I still see one side very yellowish.

It's very orange. Red, even. Blood-red...

Oh, my God, the moon has turned to blood. It's the rapture!

...Hey, why am I still here? Oh right, the sins...

The light that you do see on the moon right now is actually sunlight that is refracted through the Earth's atmosphere. If you were standing on the moon right now, you'd be seeing an awesome eclipse of the sun as the Earth passed in front of it. All around the disk of the Earth you'd see a post-sunset glow. It would probably be reddish; whatever colour you would see is the colour that the moon appears to be right now.

Damn I wish it were clear here.

Was just outside here on VIsland watching it. It is blood red, at the bottom half and it looked like it was bleeding. Amazing really. Sky is clear everywhere wish the trees were not in the way have to go down the street to view it.

Edited to add what happened to the webcaste in Norway?

Outside in Calgary; it's still pale brownish-greyish; none of your blood-redness here [it's Alberta after all ] I think it brightened and dimmed while I watched but could not be sure.

I don't know... it was black for a while, as if transmission were lost, or it had clouded over there or something. Now it looks like the moon is there, just very dark.

It's not a very high-resolution image, but it was about as good as I could find.
http://webcast1.uio.no/oslo1_eng.html

About half an hour left of totality...

I tried several sites on your list linked above and some were cancelled because of clouds and rain; for others the servers were down; maybe too much traffic?

It's back to a nice bright silver with a diminishing dark bite in it. And for the finale, a few songs.

By the light of the silvery moon...

That Saskatoon moon is calling to me...

Shine on, shine on harvest moon...

Moon river, wider than a mile...

Fly me to the moon and let me play among the stars...
