Since when did Diane Francis start channelling Vandana Shiva? Alas, if only she could see how this relates to her other views!
But then, do we really want Diane Francis on the left?

Just goes to show that labels like "left" and "right" are virtually meaningless, AFAIC.

No, there is a sense to left and right -- what's your position on capitalism, or the right of private property? That pretty much defines where you are on the left-right scale. Of course, there are many other attitudes that go into the complex of a political position, but it's not true that "left" and "right" are meaningless, not as they are conventionally used, at any rate.

Uh oh - that definition has troubling implications for my self-perception...

"Overpatenting". I like that.

Well, one can never fault the Americans for going for anything with sheer gusto, whether it be lawsuits or how many ways from Sunday you can lock up something that should rightly be public property.

Well if you wholeheartedly approve of capitalism, you are a right-winger, MJ. If you think it needs to be nipped and tucked here and there, you're a centrist, and if you think capitalism has to go sooner or later, you're a leftist... I suspect you are a nipper and tucker, MJ, a right-wing left-winger.

I agree with Diane Francis ... What a rush !

I never thought I'd say that one !

But she's got a damn good point, why should the rich folks have the only way of protecting what they say is theirs. And that goes back to :

Talking about patents and "overpatenting", did anyone hear about this?

quote:
For years, British Telecom says it tolerated the royalty-free use of a technology it patented in 1989, but recently it had a change of heart and decided it was time to collect.

Last week its lawyers sent out letters to the top Internet service providers in the United States, alerting them they'd best begin discussions for licensing the technology, referred to in BT's patent as "an information handling system in which information is derived from a computer at a remote point and transmitted via the public telephone network to terminal apparatus."

Translated from patent speak, BT explained, that means "hyperlink."

Bullshit. What about cable modems? That isn't part of the telephone network.

I really REALLY REALLY REALLY hate it when corporations try to manipulate the legal system and the patent system to try and seek profits when they're so in-fucking-COMPETENT that they couldn't find a profit with a goddamn map, compass and flashlight.

And don't get me started on amazon.com.

*extends claws*

Come closer and ask me that.

*retracts claws*

amazon.com did a very dumb thing about 3 years ago. They patented a fairly broad use of cookies and attempted to sue other people for breach of patent... probably because they wouldn't know how to find a profit with a map and a compass.

Speaking of cookies, I think women should take out patents on recipes.

For example, the recipe for "cheeseburger" would bring in a hefty sum if patented.

And what about the intellectual property in
"Tuna casserole".

Similarly, my dear mom's lemon meringue pie....

We should make sure this happens before McDonald's and Mother Tucker's step in to take away those rights from The People.
