It's not supposed to be about profit. It's about reducing harm to individuals and society at large. We don't ask, "Where's the profit?" for schools, police, paramedics, firefighters or suicide hotlines.
I think we do ask that there is a profit in all those things but like business profit is not always measured in dollars. Not on the face of it anyway.
For example, a Firefighter stops a fire from destroying a home, which means that it will cost less to rebuild the home, which means that insurance companies pay out less in claims.
Which means premiums for fire insurance can be lower and we can afford the cost of the firefighter.
Further we get the information that the firefighter gains through inspection and investigation that helps us to live in a safer environment and reduce the amount of lives lost due to fire.
So, in a round about way we do profit from all those things in the same manner up to a limit.
But with legalizing heroin we are assuming some of the responsibility for the damages iv drug use does to a person. What happens in the case of a pregnant woman addicted to heroin? In distributing and helping to maintain her heroin useage, are we negligent when it comes to adverse effects on the baby?
How do we contend with the problem of escalated useage? And as well just how liable are we should someone die while shooting our heroin?
